In today's digital era, speed is what we all care about; we want almost everything instantly and we expect everything to be done spontaneously. Technology helps to deliver speed and sometime even quality.  However, the question is "does technology provide lifestyle?"

What exactly is a lifestyle? Certainly not expensive cameras, fancy food, extravagant watches or even luxury vacations. Lifestyle in today's high speed technologically advanced era should consist of Appreciation of your Surrounding, another word, Lifestyle is about Appreciation. Wait for a while, pause for a second, take a third or forth look at the same thing, and you may discover a whole new perspective from your daily surrounding. Technology is to assist you to pursue yourself, and definitely not you chasing after technology.

Applying this same mentality onto photography, we would buy the latest camera so that we could record what we see, express how we feel, and hopefully to define who we are. All these photos taken are stored and displayed at our social medias, forums, and eventually most if not all of the photos are permanently located at the hard disks inside our computers. It takes 2 seconds to upload a photo onto anywhere, and we would take thousands and thousands of photos a year. What happen to these photos that were taken few years ago? How about those images you feel they are not up to the standard to be displayed publicly yet they still hold some sentimental value you do not simply wish to press the "Delete" button to be permanently erased from your hard disk?? Do you find images from your historical database which you did not like, only to find them to be a "great capture" today?? Do you really often scan through your images of your historical past Gig after Gig?

How about storing your images from a traditional point of view? That is, by making an actual physical print like in the good old days. You would spend time going through the past images and to look for one image that is worth while to get printed. What's even better and even slower is to compile a photo book, you would be spending even more time going through your image library, looking for a series of images to be compiled inside one single book. You would be telling a story using a book instead of one single image. It is very time consuming, and it is a lot more difficult than simply clicking a shutter then press "Upload", but in the end it is very satisfying. Isn't lifestyle an effort made by you? to be more involved with photography using your hands and thoughts than merely sipping coffee with a Rolleiflex hanging around your neck in a fancy cafe.

Making a photobook is somewhat popular in overseas, and this trend is catching up in HK. AO Photobook, it seems, is the only local company making a lot of effort to create the awareness of Photo Book making culture in HK. Last year DcHome supported their first annual PhotoBook competition, and this year AO will be having the second annual photobook competition again. This competition is not an easy event to organize, a lot of problems will have to be overcome which I'm sure would shy away many other companies. I salute to AO's efforts and their intention to contribute to a more diversified photographic community in HK.
