The scene with the "tank man" photo. The ad maker didn't even bother to reverse the photo so that it's optically correct, lol. Sloppy job.
And if the ad is trying to tell the story of how this photo was taken, then it should acknowledge the fact that it was taken by Nikon gear.
But the ad changes it into a Leica R camera.

If brave front-line journalism is what the ad promotes, then the brand doesn't matter.
But if it's only the brand that the ad's interested in promoting, then of course it must be changed into a Leica.

Seems quite obvious that the ad is only doing the latter.

This ad caused some consternation from mainland mainstream media, although most netizens seem to like it.
Leica AG has since disowned this ad and claiming that none of its subsidiaries authorised or commissioned this ad. So it has stopped being an official Leica ad now, lol.

I personally dislike this ad intensely, not because it depicts the Tian'anmen Sqr massacre, but because it is a thinly (and badly) veiled exploitation of real front-line journalists.
It purports to be a tribute to these brave journalists, but it does not even name any of these brave people by name while using them to advertise a brand. It wants to suggest that Leica is in some way associated with this kind of bravery and adherence to truth, but that's just Leica's own self-invention and self-fashioning.
It depicts African and middle eastern regions with stereotypical broad strokes.
It also deliberately replaces the gear used for taking the famous "tank man" photo, which was actually Nikon, with Leica. Such dishonesty! You can actually see the "tank man" photo superimposed onto the reflections on the front element of the lens in one scene.

To me, this is just a pure brand-driven profit-driven dishonest advertisement at the expense of real brave journalists. I doubt that Leica was not in some way behind it though. They are of course quick to disown it, but I suspect that was simply because Leica didn't want to get officially boycotted in mainland China and lose its huge market there. And this came from the same profit-driven rationale that lies behind this culturally insensitive and historically ignorant ad.

I just think this is a rather good or eye catching commerical ad. no more than this.
