In case you can get p-aminophenol (CAS# 123-30-8), it is very easy to synthesize p-aminophenol hydrochloride. Typically, a rodinal-type developer is made from 100g p-aminophenol HCl, 300g potassium metabisulfite, 50g sodium hydroxide and 850ml water. If you start with p-aminophenol, just mix 75g p-aminophenol, 57ml concentrated hydrochloric acid and 710ml water, stir for 15 minutes, and filter off the undissolved p-aminophenol. The complete stock solution is then prepared by supplementing it with 300g K2S2O5 and 50g NaOH.
Alternatively, believe it or not, you can also use acetaminophen (as in Tylenol and yes, the pain killer!) in place of p-aminophenol. First, dissolve 2.5g ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and 1.3g sodium bicarbonate in 50ml water. Then crush fifteen 500mg acetaminophen tablets (i.e. 7.5g total) into powder, add the acetaminophen along with 4g NaOH, and stir. Add water to 800ml, 10g ascorbic acid, and 10g borax. Make it up to 1L with water. This stock developer can be diluted to 4L of working solution with the addition of 35g ascorbic acid and 100g borax.
Hope that helps. |
